Arts Make Houston Vibrant
Houston in Color, formerly known as BIPOC Arts Network and Fund, nourishes artistic brilliance and creative freedom across Houston’s communities of color.
Our work is rooted in relationships — building trust, reciprocity and long-term connection. We support cultural catalysts, both organizations and artists, by providing tools and skills to sustain their work, amplifying their contributions and stories, as well as unlocking funding and creative investment.
We invite Houston to see itself as a mosaic of cultures, artistic traditions, languages and people worthy of recognition, celebration and financial support.
From Project Row Houses to the preservation of living histories in neighborhoods like Freedmen’s Town, Lyon’s Avenue and Bellaire’s Asia Town, the streets of Houston are paved with arts and culture. Whether recently settled or with roots that stretch as long as Buffalo Bayou, each community of color has made the city more itself.
The wide range of artistic disciplines — from the visual arts to spoken word — give the city its shape and texture.
All of these identities, communities and creative practices have created a cultural landscape as dazzling as the Houston skyline.
At the same time, the dominant systems that fund and promote the arts have not recognized that people of color-led arts organizations are the center of gravity that Houston’s culture orbits. These organizations and the artists they support face systemic barriers to making their voices heard: fewer resources, less exposure and scarcer opportunities to build sustainable impact.
Despite these challenges, Houston’s artists and cultural organizations are already shaping the city’s cultural identity. With the resources and community to sustain and grow their work, they can more fully express their creative power and transform Houston’s arts ecosystem.
We Back the Artists Who Power Our City
How We Nourish an Arts Community
Houston in Color has grown from a philanthropic initiative into an organization dedicated to supporting an interconnected community of artists who bring unique cultural stories to the works they create and share with our city.
We fund and connect arts organizations and artists across disciplines whose creations carry the power, values and traditions of Houston’s communities of color.
-
We connect artists across backgrounds and disciplines.
When artists from different backgrounds and traditions collaborate and connect, new ideas grow. That’s why we intentionally build networks that connect artists across generations, races, ethnicities and disciplines. The relationships and infrastructure we build will outlast any single grant. -
We build community power.
We’re amplifying the work of arts organizations and artists of color who shape Houston’s arts and culture. We work hand-in-hand with our community’s cultural leaders and artists to co-create a Houston where resources are abundant, and artists and community-rooted organizations play an active role in shaping resource distribution. -
We give arts organizations the space and resources they need to take risks and unlock new discoveries.
Our funding provides cultural leaders with space and resources to connect, dream and create. We meet artists and organizations where they are, providing resources that range from crisis relief to long-term sustainability that includes time, care, rest, adaptation and growth.
